The Cambodian Association (Auckland) Incorporated is a charitable organization originally formed in 1984 by a small group of Cambodian in Auckland to assist new arrival of fellow Cambodian refugees to settle in the great Auckland City. Its task were involved :
- Introduction of new arrivals to fellow Cambodians in each suburb in order to provide assistance for the beginning of their new life in this country.
- Organized traditional and religious events and festivals.
- Organized fund raising to support families in hardship and to support funeral services.
- On going support to families who need assistance to integrate into New Zealand Society.
Its main objective was to bring the community together in order to assist each other in this new home.
The Association was later registered as an Incorporated Society in 1986 and established teaching classes of English Language for adult Cambodians, Cambodian Language to young Cambodians and produced its publication to update the community with the local news of the city and New Zealand. It has also assisted for the establishment of a Cambodian Buddhist Temple for religious need of the community. In June 2001, the Association has established its own Centre located at 105 Wyllie Road Papatoetoe Auckland and a Buddhist Temple at the same location to cope with the number of Cambodian living in this city for their mental and spiritual need.
The majority of the registered members of the association are of Cambodian refugee back grounds that have been through a great deal of hardship from:
- The civil war created by the Khmer Rouge
- The torture and killing by the Khmer Rouge and the lost of family members
- The ill treatment during their escape off Cambodia
These are some common grounds, which brought this community to work together to overcome all emotional feeling of the past and to build a strong community for its future in order to assist its own community and bring up its future generation as New Zealand Cambodian in Auckland.
